Aviation History Hub is a passion project lead by John Skene. After a lifetime in commercial aviation, John has dedicated his retirement to advocating for aviation history and sharing stories of heroes and aircrafts, from their invention until now.
The Mission
Having recently bought a new van, John had big plans to convert the interior into a travelling history hub to tour round festivals and places of interest where he can share the fascinating stories and artefacts he’s collected over the years. To peak the interest of passersby, John needed a visual signpost for the van.
The Solution
John’s only previous piece of design work was his business card. One of the concepts I presented visually tied in with this design, showing the past and present and using a striking blue. Blue vinyl wraps have been shown to fade more slowly than ones containing red, which was an important consideration for John to make the most of his investment.
The Execution
After presenting many options that demonstrated a more playful look, John opted for a visual direction that he felt better represented him, his project and his ideas.
Logos: In order to present the Aviation History Hub as a professional legitimate archive, we opted for a simple yet clear lock-up of the words between two abstract and historically styled wings, playing on designs from the days when viable and commercial flight was being developed.
Details: With John’s guidance on the more technical aspects of the design, we’ve depicted a visualisation of the airflow physics surrounding the logo as though it were travelling around a plane’s wing. The two planes depicted on the covered window show the past and future of aircraft design, something John felt showed the essence of his passion.
The Result
With local sign writer Graphic Garage doing an excellent job on the van wrap, John now has a van with decals on every side, representing his history hub and peaking interest in passersby. He now proudly brings this van with him to start conversations and shares his stories across the country.
